BioStephen Vincent Strange is Earth's Sorcerer Supreme. He has dedicated his life to protecting the universe against evil occult and mystical beings.
Strange was once a brilliant bur arrogant neurosurgeon. He abandoned surgery after suffering nerve damage in his hands that resulted from a car accident. He wandered the world in search of a cure and eventually settled in Tibet to study the mystic arts with Earth's then Sorcerer Supreme (known as the Ancient One due to his incredible age: ~500 or 600 years).
Strange was born in 1930 but still has the appearance of a man in his 40s [a fact which some of the current Marvel artists and writers seem to forget every once in a while]. Due to the effect of various magical influences, he is extremely long-lived and should expect to live for centuries unless his physical body is destroyed. He has confronted and defeated death, and, after fighting in a 5,000 year long occult war, had his physical body restored to the age of approximately 45.
His family are all deceased (though it is possible that his brother Victor may still be alive somewhere). He is married, though estranged from his wife, Clea, ruler of the Dark Dimension and a Sorceress Supreme in her own right. He's been linked romantically to several different women over the years, most recently Night Nurse (and there was some serious flirting going on with Ms. Marvel, too).
Strange has the most awesome "manservant" ever: Wong, a mystical, martial arts master whose family has served the Sorcerer Supreme for ages. Wong is snarky, and can kick serious ass when he feels like it. Strange and Wong mainly get along, except for those occasional times when Wong gets pissed off and tries to kill the Doctor. He can be a little touchy like that.
Strange probably knows more about magic than any other mortal in the Marvel universe. He has the world's largest collection of magical amulets, books, and weapons, including the coolest Cloak of Levitation ever seen, the Eye of Agamotto (which can radiate the blinding light of truth, pierce illusions, probe minds, open extradimensional portals, etc.) and the Book of the Vishanti (which is a magical weapon that contains every protective counter-spell ever written).
Powers: Name it! If it's magical, he does it, everything from energy manipulation, matter transformation, teleportation and time travel, mesmerism, thought control, possession and animation of people and objects, illusion casting, etc. He can separate his astral form from his physical form, and frequently travels to various astral dimensions to study or fight.
Strange usually works solo, though he was a founding member of the Defenders, and has worked with the Avengers, the X-Men, and other teams. During the "House of M" events, Strange's magic prevented the Scarlet Witch from destroying all of the mutants. He sat out the events of the Civil War because he was too distressed by the sight of heroes fighting against heroes, and he feared that deaths would results. Strange has sworn to never take a life. He currently one of the leaders of the anti-Superhero Registration Act, and is hiding the New Avengers in the Sanctum Sanctorum, his Greenwich Village mansion. He has also recently been revealed to be part of a secret group of heroes called the Illuminati who have been monitoring and guiding huge events in Marvel history, such as the Kree-Skrull War. The ultimate aims of this group are yet to be known. This group agreed to exile the Hulk on an alien planet. Strange agreed only because he wanted Bruce Banner to be happy and find peace. The repercussions of that act have yet to be seen, but you know what they say about good intentions.
Best Dr. Strange trivia ever: He may be the Master of the Mystic Arts, but he utterly sucks at poker, as was demonstrated in Spectacular Spiderman #21.
